100% Sappanwood Powder ~ Caesalpinia sappan

A hardwood tree native to South and Southeast Asia and South America.

The heartwood is used as a dye material, rich in the coloring compound brazilin, which oxidizes to brazilein (red pigment).

Produces vibrant reds, pinks, corals, and purples depending on pH and mordants.

More effective on protein fibers (wool, silk) but can be used on cellulose with tannin and mordant

  • Being pH-sensitive:

    • Acidic bath → more pink/purple tones

    • Alkaline bath → warmer reds and oranges

With Mordants:

  • Alum yields bright red-pink tones.

  • Iron gives purples to grey-violets.

  • Copper or tin may deepen and shift color to scarlet or orange.

A beautiful array or hues available in this one plant.

The dye bath may be used multiple times for lighter shades.

The powder is used at 20 - 50% WOF
