🌰 Oak Gall (Gallnut) Powder ~ Quercus infectoria
High-Tannin Mordant Assistant – Rich Greys & Enhanced Fastness
Oak Gall Powder, also known as Gallnut, is a natural, tannin-rich material harvested from galls formed on oak trees (Quercus infectoria). It’s one of the richest natural sources of tannin, making it a powerful mordant assistant—especially for cellulose fibers like cotton and linen. When used in combination with iron mordants, gallnut also produces beautiful greys, charcoal tones, and enhances the depth and durability of many natural dyes.
Key Features:
100% pure, ground oak gall (gallnut)
Exceptionally high in natural tannins – up to 60–70%
Strengthens dye adhesion and improves colorfastness on cellulose fibers
Produces soft greys and dark neutrals when used with iron sulphate
Ideal for mordanting, eco-printing, ink-making, and layered dyeing
Dyeing & Mordanting Notes:
Often used as the first step in mordanting cotton, linen, and other plant-based fibers
Pairs well with alum acetate or alum sulphate for rich and clear color development
Mixed with iron mordant, it creates cool greys, stormy blues, or black
Can also be used in traditional iron-gall ink recipes
As a tannin mordant: Use10-15% WOF
May be rinsed or dried before the alum mordant step
