🌰 Walnut Hull Powder - Juglans regia

Rich Browns & Earthy Neutrals – Naturally Tannin-Rich Dye

Walnut Hull Powder, made from the dried outer shells (hulls) of the Juglans regia  tree, is a powerful natural dye prized for its deep brown, warm taupe, and greyish neutral tones. Naturally high in tannins, it can be used without a mordant and also serves as a subtle tannin source for preparing cellulose fibres like cotton and linen.

Key Features:

  • 100% pure, ground walnut hulls

  • Naturally rich in tannins and juglone pigments

  • Produces earthy browns, greys, and soft black tones

  • Can be used with or without mordants

  • Suitable for wool, silk, cotton, linen, and even paper dyeing

Dyeing Notes:

  • Produces strong color on its own; mordants can enhance tone or increase fastness

  • Combine with iron mordant for cool greys and soft black

  • Works beautifully in immersion dyeing, eco-printing, and bundle dyeing

  • Also used in wood staining and traditional ink-making

  • Use 30-50% WOF depending on desired depth of color
